Isaac Bear Early College Info

Isaac Bear Early College Info:

Email from Isaac Bear Assistant Principal with details: Good afternoon, Parents and Students. I hope that this finds you well on a rather interesting day of weather. As we move along the calendar, there are a few updates to the IBEC application process to make you aware of. For those of you who received my first email, you will find the information at the bottom of this email (below the bar) a repeat. For those of you receiving this email update for the first time, please read all of the information so that you are aware of key dates and events. IBEC will begin semesterly final exams this week, in case you need to contact the school. Front office staff will be available through December 19. I’ll start with new information: Essay dates: In an effort to get to know our applicants for the 2018-2019 freshman cohort, we will be conducting an essay portion of the application. There are two session dates at IBEC from which to choose:   January 11 (2:00) January 18 (2:00)   Students should email me (jean.hall@nhcs.net) to reserve a spot. If schools have a large group of students wishing to sit for the essay, I will be going to those schools (Williston and Holly Shelter are on the list so far) and students need not adhere to the above dates.  School tours – revised: Just a clarification that tours are reserved for current 8th-graders and their families. Our last small group morning tour (from 9:15-10:15) with openings is January 23. We are adding two afternoon tour dates:   January 11 (3:00) January 18 (3:00)   These tours will immediately follow the 2:00 essay sessions. Students need not sit for the essay on these days to reserve a spot for a tour.  You do need to reserve a spot for any of these tour dates by calling Michelle Franz in our front office (910-350-1387). Details can be found here: https://sites.google.com/a/nhcs.net/admissions/see-our-school Please park in our lot (it has limited space), or in the lot associated with UNCW’s Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship and walk over. Parent/Student Informational Session This session will be held at UNCW at 6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, December 12. Location: Bear Hall Auditorium, Room 106 (5174 Randall Dr., Wilmington, NC, 28403). Parking is available in the Leutze Hall, Randall Library, and Kenan Auditorium lots.  Our principal, Dr. Steve Sullivan, and I will present on the 9th- and 10th-grade components of IBEC, as will our UNCW liaison, Dr. Keisha Bennett-Smith, on the transition to UNCW coursework. This is the only large presentation session that we are anticipating at this time, so feel free to share this information with anyone who might like to have it. ___________________________________________________________________________________________________ (New information to those receiving this email for the first time:) Application timeline and where to catch “mini-presentations” As of today, we are expecting signature program applications to become available on January 10. Being an early college, the open choice process does not apply to a student accepted to IBEC. Here are key dates around the application timeline, along with locations where students and parents can learn more about each of New Hanover County Schools’ signature programs (*note that school presentations are not intended for parents): January 7: School presentations: Myrtle Grove 9:00-10:30, Murray 12:00-1:30 Parent presentations: Minnie Evans Center 6:00-7:30   January 8: School Presentations: Virgo 9:30-11:00, Gregory/Williston 12:00-1:30, Roland Grise 2:00-3:30 Parent Presentation: Roland Grise Auditorium 6:00-7:30

I hope that this assists in your decision-making process. Should you have questions prior to a tour or presentation, please don’t hesitate to contact me. Our website is currently undergoing an overhaul, so it may be easier to contact me directly than fish around for answers to your questions. Thank you and have a great remainder to your weekend – Jean Hall
